Sloppy Joe recipe, its American history.

Benjamin Franklin invented the sloppy Joe. He originally called it the Sloppy Ben, naming it the sandwich of America, but over the years it became known as the Sloppy Joe, a sandwich of the lower classes.

The name "sloppy" comes from the fact that eating it results in the filling spilling out and getting all over the person eating it. Sometimes it’s served "open face", with the bun halves or slices of bread next to each other with the filling on.

Modern Sloppy Joes

Today’s Sloppy Joe is an American dish of ground beef, onions, sweetened tomato sauce or ketchup and other seasonings, served on a hamburger bun. Commercially made sauces such as Manwich and others are also available. Sloppy Joes are a simple variation of the barbecue sandwich which uses shredded beef or pork and barbecue sauce.

1 lb hamburger

1 onion, chopped

1 tsp garlic, minced

1 cup ketchup

1 cup water (add 1/4 brown sugar to water)

1 tablespoon molasses

Cook hamburger, onion and garlic until hamburger is brown and onion is soft.

Add 1 cup ketchup and 1 cup water with brown sugar.

Boil until some of the liquid has evaporated. Add 1 tablespoon of molasses. Simmer about 15 minutes.

Serve on hamburger buns and top with cheese.

3 tablespoons brown sugar

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

8 hamburger buns, split

In a sauce pan (for small consistency) or a large skillet put on medium-high heat, sauté the ground beef for 5 minutes. Add the onion, red bell pepper, green pepper, and 2 cloves of minced garlic; sauté for 5 more minutes, or until onion is tender. Drain the fat.

Add brown sugar 10 minutes before stirring. (If you add it too early it may burn)

Best Sloppy Joe recipes vary regionally

In the Midwest a Joe known as the loosemeat sandwich is popular. In other parts of the Midwest, these are known as looseburgers or as Maid-Rites. This variation of the sandwich is made with only seasoned ground beef, and does not include a tomato-based sauce.

In parts of northern New Jersey, Sloppy Joe refers to a completely different type of sandwich. It will usually includes one or more types of deli meat (i.e. turkey, ham, corned beef, roast beef, or sliced cow tongue), coleslaw, and Russian dressing on rye bread.
